Daniel Kids: Rock-n-Ride 2009

One of my favorite Daniel Kids' events is their annual Rock-n-Ride celebration. Hundreds of bikers gather each year to help raise money for this great organization. In 2009, I had the pleasure of developing some of the marketing materials by writing various television/radio scripts and press releases.

Post-Event Press Release

500 MOTORCYCLES DESCENDED ON DOWNTOWN JACKSONVILLE
TO RAISE MORE THAN $67,000 FOR DANIEL KIDS

JACKSONVILLE, FLA. (Aug. 29, 2009)– More than 500 motorcycles lined Independent Drive on the morning of August 29, 2009 for the 8th Annual daniel Rock’n Ride, and grossed more than $67,000 for the local abused, neglected and emotionally-troubled kids at daniel.

Widely known as the First Coast’s premier motorcycle ride, this year’s ride — backed by title sponsors Blue Cross Blue Shield of Florida and Enterprise Integration — boosted interest by changing its venue to the Jacksonville Landing. Riders launched at 10:30 a.m. for a 60-mile route around the city, which included passing daniel’s Belfort Road campus, where daniel kids stood outside waving signs and cheering for their benefactors. Upon return to the Landing, more than 750 riders and daniel supporters enjoyed an after-party at Mavericks Rock’n Honky Tonk.

Lori Frye, a Harley Davidson rider and long-time daniel Rock’n Ride participant loved the new downtown venue, but said the location doesn’t matter as much as the cause. “I ride for the kids,” said Frye.

“We had a great group out here today, dedicated to our 125-year-old mission of helping local children in crisis,” said daniel CEO and President Jim Clark. “The money raised today will go a long way to supporting programs that improve the odds for abused and neglected kids, giving them the therapy and support they need to heal.”

The monies raised in the ride, primarily come from corporate sponsors and rider registration, but the event’s drawing and silent and live auctions also make a big impact. Overall, the drawing for a Honda motorcycle or watercraft collected more than $8,000, with both the auctions raising more than $8,300. This year’s unexpected top live auction item involved WJXT weatherman Richard Nunn spontaneous offer to shave his head on stage. Attendees pooled their money to bid $1,000. Nunn answered the call, sharing the stage with a stylist from Paul Mitchell the School-Jacksonville, who was on site giving free haircuts for daniel donations, letting her shave his head to buzz cut.

Other events included the Kilwin’s sponsored ice cream eating contest in which six contestants challenged each other to see who could finish a giant bowl of ice cream in the least amount of time. Richard Nunn stepped up again to take the win.
